Traditions and customs in Vorarlberg’s Montafon region
Whether it’s the annual return of the cows from the Alpine pastures, the “Maisäß” or Sura Kees cheese: The Montafon region is full of old customs and traditions.
Even the region’s name goes back to the olden times. After all, the primary local language of the region used to be Rhaeto-Romanic until the 15th century. Although the origin of the name has not been fully clarified to this day, it is believed that it goes back to the Rhaeto-Romanic terms “Mont davon” (“mountain in front” or “foothill”) or “Munt tovun” (“mountain with holes” or “mining mountain”).
